Melanin is responsible for the color of skin, eyes, and hair. A loss of skin coloration due to the debilitated melanocyte pigments is called Vitiligo. It appears as white patches anywhere in the body. Areas exposed to the sun are usually more prone to this condition. Imbalanced doshas such as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha get vitiated. This is the root cause of Vitiligo. The above mentioned doshas spoil Raktha (blood), Mamsa (muscles), and Medhas Dhatus. Hence, it is referred to as ‘TRIDOSAJ’ disease in the field of Ayurveda.
Bhrajak Pitta is responsible for skin color. An imbalance in Bhrajak pitta leads to toxins that impair deeper tissues. The impairment ultimately leads to depigmentation. The faster the disease develops, the longer the time taken for treatment. It is considered as an auto-immune disorder and Vitiligo is triggered by both internal and external elements.
Internal causes of Vitiligo are Stress, Vitamin B12& copper deficiency, family history, and AB and B blood group whereas the external causes are wearing artificial jewellery, skin injury, pollution, in contact with the chemicals used for developing photos, friction and pressure caused by wearing tight clothes and being in contact with rubber or nylon for a long time.
According to Ayurveda, improper digestion is the root cause of Vitiligo. So the treatment mainly targets proper digestion. Ayurvedic Treatment for Vitiligois started after a precise analysis.
Pathya (Dietary guidelines): It involves diet restrictions and maintaining a healthy lifestyle through yoga and meditation to relieve physical and mental stress.
Shaman chikitsa: This treatment involves oral intake of herbs and external application of herbal medications. There are two types of medications which are usually used and they are:
Kastha ausadhi or herbal drugs: Usage of photosensitizing drugs locally along with sun exposure. The toxins and impurities are washed out by prescribing blood purifiers.
Ras ausadhi or herbo-mineral drugs: It initiates re-pigmentation in the cases of fast spreading and also acts like an immunosuppressant.
During treatment, precautionary measures are advised such as avoiding stress, having minimum sun exposure, avoiding foods rich in Vitamin C, treating dental cavities, sinusitis, and GI infections promptly.
