Psoriasis is a challenge for medical community and is considered a genetic as well as an autoimmune disorder. It is a skin disorder characterized by aggressive multiplication of skin cells that eventually die on the skin's surface causing raised, red plaques covered with white scales.
Common Location of Psoriatic lesions
• Knees
• Elbows
• Scalp
• Torso, palms, and soles of the feet
Although the exact cause of psoriasis is not known but it is believed to occur due to a combination of any of the following factors:
• Defects in immune regulation
• Genetic predisposition
• Environmental factors
• Emotional stress
• Trauma
• Streptococcal infection
The symptoms of psoriasis depend on the type and may include:
• Red skin, often covered with loose, silver-coloured scales
• Itchy or painful skin
• Cracking and bleeding of skin
• Plaques can merge and cover larger skin area
• Discoloration and pitting of the nails
• Crumbling or detachment of nails from the nail bed
