The causes of vitiligo are different in different pathies.

Causes of vitiligo according to modern science

According to modern medicine, vitiligo or leucoderma is an autoimmune disorder in which a person’s own immune system destroys the melanocyte skin cells that make melanin and give color to the skin. This autoimmune response can be triggered by external as well as internal factors.

Internal causes:

• Positive family history

• Presence of infection in body

• Gastric and liver related problems

• B and AB blood group

• Pregnancy

• Acute illness

• Stressful conditions

• Copper and vitamin B12 deficiency

External causes:

• Long term contact with nylon and rubber can cause chemical irritation to skin

• Pressure and friction caused by extremely tight clothes/watches/undergarments

• Indiscriminate use of antibiotics oxy-tetracycline/ciprofloxacin/streptomycin

• Contact with photographic developing solution

• Radiation from T.V

• Artificial jewellery

• Injury to skin

• Pollution

Causes of Vitiligo or Shwet kushth in Ayurveda

• Virudh aahar or simultaneous intake of foods with opposite quality like yogurt with milk, fish with milk or pickle with milk , honey with ghee, milk with salt, milk with fruits (specially vitamin C containing fruits)

• Drinking cold drinks or cold water in stress or after having hard physical work

• Sudden change in skin temperature

• Taking heavy meals in short durations without getting earlier meals properly digested

• Enjoying sex within one hour of taking meals

• Sleeping in day time

• Stopping the natural urges like stool, urine and semen

• Excessive use of vitamin C in diet.

• Excessive use of yogurt, black pepper and sea food in regular meals

• Lesser exposure to sunlight

• Use of new grains

All these will produce slow poisons. These slow poisons may enter in the blood system and come out through our skin in the form of skin diseases including vitiligo.
